The candidature
The Spanish government, the Government of Catalonia and Barcelona City Council have joined forces to propose Barcelona as the seat of the Secretariat of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean.
This Secretariat will coordinate and monitor projects in strategic sectors to be implemented within the framework of the Barcelona Process: Union for the Mediterranean, as agreed at the Paris Summit of Heads of State and Government on 13 July 2008.
A city which has provided the cornerstone for the Euro-Mediterranean project, Barcelona has complete political, historical and geographical legitimacy to become the host city of this new institution. It has already been the venue for two key events: the inaugural conference of the Barcelona Process in 1995 and the first Euro-Mediterranean Summit in 2005. It has also made possible, over the course of all these years, numerous encounters of Euro-Mediterranean civil society. Additionally, the city has, since 1989, been the seat of the European Institute of the Mediterranean (IEMed), which promotes Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and cooperation and which is behind this web site.
Secretariat
With the Secretariat, the city will be able to reinforce this dynamism and Mediterranean vocation and strengthen its position as meeting place to facilitate initiatives and projects aiming for a more united Mediterranean.
It is for these reasons that it is offering an exception headquarters building, Pedralbes Palace, not to mention all the advantages the city can offer with its experience of organising large-scale international projects, its strategic geographic situation and communications node, and its ability to work with a range of national and international organisations.
